On TikTok, Bytedance’s short video platform, 1.4 million videos shared by Nigerian users were taken down in the third quarter of this year.
The site said Nigeria was one of the top 50 places where videos breaking its rules came from in Q3. Over the period in question, 136.5 million films were taken down worldwide.
The company just put out a report called the Community Guidelines Enforcement Report. It says that the top 50 markets that broke its rules accounted for about 90% of all material removals for the quarter.
It was said that the material taken down broke at least one of TikTok’s rules, which cover things like Safety, Civility, Mental and Behavioural Health, Privacy and Security, and Honesty and Integrity.

Accounts deleted
TikTok eliminated 73.6 million spam and fraudulent accounts during the review period.
We constantly monitor external threats, phony accounts, and participation on the platform. The numbers in these areas fluctuate because these attackers constantly investigate and assault our systems.
Even so, we will quickly detect and remove any accounts, content, or activities that try to raise popularity on our platform artificially. As the threat landscape evolves, TikTok stays committed to protecting our community and increasing our cyber response to aggressive actors.
The business also said it took down 348.7 million likes on videos. It also eliminated 7.2 billion fake follow requests and 211.3 million fake friends.
TikTok said that the likes, followers, and follow requests taken away came from “automated or inauthentic mechanisms.”
1.3 million ads removed
TikTok said that in the third quarter of 2023, more ads were taken down because they broke their advertising rules, while fewer ads were taken down because of steps taken at the account level. The number of ads taken down for breaking the rules rose from 962,574 in Q2 to 1.3 million in Q3 2023, according to the study.
“We constantly examine and improve our technologies to recognise new patterns and promptly and adequately eliminate ads that violate our regulations. According to the corporation, tight standards, innovative detection techniques, and constant system improvement aim to create a trustworthy, entertaining, and aligned advertising experience with our lively TikTok community.
Despite the removals, TikTok remains one of the most popular social media sites, and its user-generated revenue is rising.
TikTok earned $10 billion in 2023 from $3.8 billion in Apple App Store and Google Play Store spending, according to data.ai.
Data.ai reported that TikTok was the first mobile app to earn $1 billion in global consumer expenditure in Q1 2023. The social video app added $3.8 billion to its $6.2 billion customer expenditure in 2023.
