JAMB 2025 UTME: registration process and requirements

Registration for the 2025 UTME began on Monday, February 3, 2025, and ended on Saturday, March 8, 2025. Candidates were required to have a valid email address, an active phone number, and a National Identification Number (NIN), mandatory for all applicants.

The registration process involved obtaining a JAMB profile code, purchasing an e-PIN, and completing the registration at an accredited CBT centre.

The total cost for the 2025 UTME registration varied depending on whether the candidate opted for the mock examination. The fees included the UTME/DE application fee of ₦3,500, a reading text for ₦1,000, and various service charges.

JAMB implements strong measures to combat exam cheating

JAMB has implemented stringent anti-cheating measures to ensure the integrity of the examination process. These measures include advanced biometric verification and monitoring systems to detect and prevent any form of malpractice during the exams. The board’s efforts aim to maintain fairness and transparency in the admission process.

On the day of the registration closure, JAMB officials emphasised their commitment to conducting a seamless and fraud-free examination.

The board’s spokesperson noted, “We are committed to ensuring that the UTME is conducted in a manner that reflects the highest standards of integrity and fairness.” The 2025 UTME is scheduled from Friday, 25th April 2025, to Monday, 5th May 2025.

JAMB has also streamlined the result-checking process as part of its ongoing efforts to improve the examination experience. Candidates can check their results via SMS by sending “UTMERESULT” to 55019 or online through the JAMB portal. This accessibility ensures that candidates can easily access their results without unnecessary delays.

UTME 2025: Why JAMB suspended two CBT centres

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has taken decisive action by suspending two Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres for violating registration procedures during the ongoing 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The announcement was made on Tuesday, and the suspension will last 14 days.

    Details of the suspension

The affected centres are the Federal College of Education (Technical) Potiskum in Yobe State and a CBT Centre in Otukpo, Benue State. JAMB’s spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin, emphasised that these centres failed to comply with established registration guidelines. Specifically, they submitted blank copies of registration templates instead of correctly filled forms.

The violation undermines the integrity of the registration process and raises concerns about security measures in place to prevent infractions.

In his statement, Dr Benjamin expressed disappointment that some centres disregarded clear instructions, stating, “It is concerning that some centres, despite being fully briefed on the implications of failing to adhere to these guidelines, have chosen to disregard them by submitting blank copies of the registration template in a misguided effort to increase candidate submissions”.

    JAMB’s commitment to integrity

The UTME registration began on February 3, 2025, and is scheduled to conclude on March 8, 2025. JAMB has mandated that all candidates manually fill out their details before uploading them to the registration portal. This process is crucial for maintaining accurate records and ensuring that all candidate information is valid.

Dr Benjamin further warned other CBT centres about potential consequences for similar violations, stating, “Any centre found uploading blank templates in the future will face cancellation and will be barred from participating in the Board’s activities”.This suspension serves as a stern warning to uphold the standards expected by JAMB and protect the integrity of the examination process.

The founder of JAMB, established primarily to streamline admissions into tertiary institutions in Nigeria, has always advocated for transparency and fairness in educational assessments. By enforcing strict adherence to registration protocols, JAMB aims to foster a credible environment for all candidates participating in the UTME.

UTME Triumph: Village students achieve great heights

The CEO of Educare, an education technology company, told how his platform helped some students achieve 200 or higher on the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Onyia, who tweets on X.com under the account @winexviv, claimed late Tuesday that his “investment” had paid off because “none of the students scored below 200 in their JAMB” and that a couple of them even topped the 300 level.

How did village students overcome challenges to score 200+ in UTME?

In addition, he remembered how his cousin, who had a score of 187 in the 2023 UTME, improved their score to 243 this year.

He expressed his profound gratitude for the investment, stating that it had yielded significant returns. With great enthusiasm, I am delighted to announce that, based on the data collected thus far, none of the students achieved a score below 200 in their JAMB examination. I attribute this success to the blessings of Jesus Christ.

“Most people had scores above 250, and several even went above 300. Seeing my younger relative, who received a score of 187 in the previous year’s JAMB, improve to a 243 this time around is really encouraging.

In the 2024 UTME, 77% of candidates had a score lower than 200, according to a previous study.

Previously, on October 2, 2023, Onyia tweeted that the results of his “village youngsters”‘ UTME for 2022 were a “disaster,” pointing out that over 70% of the applicants failed the test.

The students signed up for “intensive morning and evening drilling” in order to improve their UTME performance in the upcoming year (2024) and made a commitment to alter the narrative.

Here is a detailed analysis on engagements.

In an effort to alter the story, the students committed to participating in “intensive morning and evening drilling” in order to improve their UTME scores in 2024.

“We took the challenge upon ourselves for it not to repeat itself again,” he stated.

What resources are available to help village students prepare for UTME?

The Educare CEO noted that the learners also took the Computer-Based Test “once monthly with a large pool of 16 years past questions across different subjects.”

He decried the low level at which some of the students were familiar with the computer system while wondering how they (the students) would succeed in the examination.

“In the CBT, we track their performances on different topics and lay more emphasis on their weaknesses across different subject topics. One common thing we noticed is that many of the youngsters are alien to computers and can’t even use a mouse or keyboard.

During the day of the JAMB (UTME), he posed the question, “How were they planning to succeed in JAMB (the UTME) when they could have probably been using a computer for the first time?”

For students who got a score of 300 or higher, Onyia said that funding opportunities would be available, and that all students’ test fees would be paid for.

“It’s an eye opener, and our mission is for all of them to score above 250,” which was the text of the tweet. We are covering all of their JAMB (UTME) test costs and giving full grants to everyone who gets a score of 300 or higher.

Analyzing the Role of Social Media in UTME Failure

In today’s digital age, social media platforms have become integral to daily life for millions of individuals, including students.

A news conference was held at the board’s headquarters in Bwari, Abuja, by the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, to announce the release of the UTME results.

According to the examination body, over 1.94 million candidates registered and sat the examination in 118 towns and over 700 centres across the country.

According to the board, 77% of the 1,842,464 candidates whose results were announced on Monday scored less than 200.

Oloyede said about the 1,842,464 applicants released: “8,401 candidates scored 300 and above; 77,070 scored 250 and above; 439,974 scored 200 and above while 1,402,490 scored below 200.”

Nigeria users blame UTME’s failure on Social media

A user on x, Foundational Nupe Lawyer1, tweeted as @egi_nupe___, blamed social media for the collective collapse on Tuesday.

The lawyer expressed displeasure and blamed social media for the high failure rate.

He wrote, “So many things are to blame for this JAMB mass failure, but social media tops my list. Children who should be studying are constantly on social media as content providers, abandoning their education.

“I had to make conscious decisions to ban our last born, 17, from using TikTok by not using an internet-enabled phone while studying for WAEC and JAMB. She can study for these tests without the internet. She had to study hard and focus because all the materials were in hard copy.

He said that though social media has its advantages, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

He added, “No doubt, social media has its good sides, but the negatives outweigh the positives, especially for children and teenagers. Even as adults, you have to make conscious efforts not to be swept away by the negativity and distractions of social media.

Another person, Enkay Orji-Daniel, blamed social media for the failure. He wrote, “What is expected of every child misusing phones?”

Omotola Oluwadare attributed the blame to Yahoo Yahoo and TikTok, a popular platform for online fraud. His words: “The TikTok and yahoo generation, pampered by their too-know parents.”

Social Media Strategies for Future UTME Aspirants

In UTME preparation, social media can help or hurt students. Although these platforms provide instructional tools and support networks, they can also cause UTME failure due to distractions and stress.

On the one hand, social media serves as a virtual library, granting students access to many study materials, practice tests, and interactive learning communities. Videos, study groups, and forums on YouTube and WhatsApp allow students to communicate, share knowledge, and get advice from peers and teachers. Improve UTME performance by boosting comprehension, study skills, and confidence using these tools.

Frequent social media also threatens students’ academic success. Online distractions like notifications, scrolling, and FOMO can cause procrastination and mismanagement, wasting study time. In addition, Instagram and Twitter’s artificial achievement standards can cause tension, anxiety, and feelings of inadequacy, lowering students’ confidence and focus during exam study.

Thus, while social media provides unmatched educational enrichment and connectivity, its unchecked effect can increase distractions, pressures, and unfavourable self-comparisons, leading to UTME failure. To maximise social media benefits while minimising hazards, students must practise self-discipline, set boundaries, and prioritise offline study practices.
