Safaricom launches tech re-skilling program for young Persons with Disabilities

Safaricom unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to empower young Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through a tech re-skilling program. 

This program, which was unveiled on Thursday and focuses on developing digital skills, is in line with Safaricom’s dedication to diversity and adjusting to the rapidly changing digital environment.

Currently in its pilot phase, the program will provide participants with a 23-week software engineering module at Moringa School in Nairobi, Kenya. Alongside technical training, students will receive career mentorship and coaching, equipping them with the tools to thrive in the IT industry.

Safaricom commits to an inclusive tech workforce

Safaricom is committed to building a future where no one is left behind, especially in the fast-paced tech industry. “As we work towards becoming Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030, we realise we cannot leave anyone behind. Currently, persons with disabilities make up 3.3 percent of our workforce, and we are keen to grow this number to 3.5 percent through re-skilling initiatives,” said Nyokabi Florence, Chief Human Resources Officer of Safaricom PLC. 

This program is a critical step toward achieving that goal, offering PWDs the opportunity to gain industry-relevant skills and boost their employability. 

This initiative builds on the success of the 2022 IT Bridge Academy, a collaboration between Safaricom and partners such as Sight Savers, the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK), Three Talents, Accenture, and CISCO. The IT Bridge Academy provided young PWDs passionate about IT with training and hands-on experience, setting a solid foundation for future endeavours.

The re-skilling program is part of Safaricom’s broader Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategy. It reflects the company’s mission to embed inclusivity in every facet of its operations—from attracting, retaining, and developing talent to engaging with customers and the wider community.

By fostering opportunities for PWDs, Safaricom is championing an inclusive workforce while empowering participants to unlock their potential in the tech-driven world.
