MTN Nigeria launches commercial 5G in partnership with Ericsson

In collaboration with Ericsson, MTN Nigeria has commercially launched the much-anticipated 5G network. The launch took place in Lagos, Nigeria, on September 18, 2022.

The launch puts Nigeria among a handful of African countries with virtual reality (VR) for millions of new consumers.

With Ericsson Radio System, MTN will offer advanced mobile broadband and fixed wireless access services, opening up many new business opportunities. The new 5G services can bring about unique, sustainable development initiatives for agriculture, energy, financial inclusion, and security, overcoming past institutional challenges and barriers to growth.

The Launch of the 5G Network

Speaking during the launch, the chief executive officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Olutokun Toriola, stated, “Every major technological evolution changes the way we live, the way we connect, and what is possible.” GSM took phone calls on the road, 2G added texting to our experience (and created a whole new language), 3G brought the internet to our phones, and 4G made video widely available on mobiles. 5G will change everything.

It will allow user to connect, create, collaborate, and compete in ways, which is a glimpse of the many possibilities 5G has in store. “What is most important is what you and every Nigerian can create with it.”

Accessing 5G Network

Subscribers who want to enjoy the 5G would require compatible devices, such as routers and mobile phones, which can be pre-ordered from designated MTN walk-in stores and online via the MTN Nigeria website and e-marketplace. MTN 5G Router Goes for N50,000

5G is the fifth generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks, which cellular phone companies began deploying worldwide in 2019, and is the planned successor to the 4G networks, which provide connectivity to most current cellphones. Its network is speculated to have more than 1.7 billion subscribers worldwide by 2025, according to the GSM Association. All 5G wireless devices in a cell are connected to the Internet and telephone network by radio waves through a local antenna in the cell. Moreso, 5G has greater bandwidth, giving higher download speeds, up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbit/s). In addition to 5G being faster than existing networks, it offers a more unified connection and connects more devices.
