Corteva Agriscience, an American agritech company, has announced the formal launch of its PowerCore technology for maize farmers in South Africa.
The answer is a novel herbicide-resistant seed feature that efficiently protects crops from harmful above-ground insects like maize stalk borer and spotted maize stem borer.
Corteva Agriscience Innovation, A Smarter Approach to Pest Control
The company’s flagship seed brands, Pannar and Pioneer, will provide PowerCore technology as part of new, high-yielding genetics within their respective maize portfolios, according to the release.
“South Africa agricultural, food, and beverage exports reached a record high of $12.4 billion in 2021, with maize playing a key role, hitting its highest export volume since 1994/1995.” Furthermore, maize is a staple for many people across the country, so it critical that local farmers have the tools they need to protect their yields,” says Tony Esmeraldo, Business Director, Corteva Agriscience, speaking at this year Grain SA Congress, an annual gathering of the country top grain producers and other industry players.
“Not only have local experiments confirmed the efficacy of PowerCore technology, but the trait has also been effectively deployed in similar climes in both Brazil and Argentina since 2012.” We are ecstatic to share the most recent improvement in Corteva Agriscience revolutionary pest management products with in-country farmers, to assist them in addressing one of the most pressing issues they encounter every day.”
What Is PowerCore Technology and How Will It Benefit Maize Farmers in South Africa?
To tackle primary and secondary pests that can cause considerable crop damage and subsequent production losses, PowerCore technology employs a combination of modes of action. The characteristic consists of three separate Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) proteins, each of which targets insects differently and helps to, extend the pesticide technology durability.

Corteva Agriscience, according to Esmeraldo, is dedicated to enriching lives by providing a varied selection of high-quality products to the market. “Farmers now have a choice in the fight against pest damage, as they may choose which Bt trait technology best matches their farms based on field history and agronomic conditions.” Our overarching goal is to provide farmers with better technologies so they can get the most out of every hectare of maize.”
