Liquid Acquires Capacity on Google’s Equiano Cable

Liquid Dataport, a subsidiary of Cassava Technologies (formerly Liquid Telecom Group), has acquired a pair of fiber cables on Equiano, the new Google-owned subsea cable linking South Africa and Europe along Africa’s west coast.

According to the company, “the cables give Liquid access to a bandwidth of 12Tbit/s on the new Internet cable, which will be ready for commercial service by the end of the year.” It is expected that the cable will lead to lower Internet prices and higher quality Internet connections in South Africa and other markets in sub-Saharan Africa. “The additional capacity augments Liquid Dataport’s existing pan-African fiber network, global satellite connectivity, and subsea cable backbone,” the company added.

David Eurin, CEO of Liquid Dataport, stated, “Access to affordable Internet connections across the continent, be it in the largest cities or the remotest villages, is a huge challenge for Africans and enterprises embracing digital technology.”

“Thus, Liquid Dataport’s landing of Equiano capacity in South Africa would considerably encourage the growth of enterprises in Southern African nations by providing easier access to high-speed connections and digital technologies like Cloud and Cybersecurity.”

He continues, “Liquid’s new submarine cable landing project is part of the company’s bigger, ongoing effort to build the largest independent network of its kind in Africa. This exertion already includes satellite connections, undersea links, and a fiber optic cable that spans the entire continent. He remarked that it broadens the company’s ability to serve clients in sectors including renewable energy, financial technology, cyber security, data centers, and more. These clients range from government agencies to small and medium-sized enterprises to multinational corporations.”

Earlier in August, Techpression reported landing a Google-owned cable system with a design capacity of 144Tbit/s in South Africa at Melkbosstrand, north of Cape Town. The Equiano subsea cable has landing stations in Portugal, Togo, Nigeria, Namibia, and St Helena Island, South Africa.

Liquid intends to interconnect across Africa

Cassava’s Africa Data Centres will house the Equiano subsea cable equipment from Liquid Dataport, therefore increasing the reach of Liquid’s One Africa Digital Network. Equiano will be available to all of Africa Data Centres’ facilities, providing Liquid Dataport’s clients with more affordable access to vast quantities of capacity.

“Liquid Dataport plans to interconnect the Equiano landing stations to its East-West network throughout Africa,” the company stated. “This would further reinforce its global IP route connecting Asia, Africa, and the US.”

With the acquisition of two fibre cables on Equiano, the new West Coast submarine cable, Liquid Dataport will be able to provide South Africa with up to 12 terabytes of extra internet capacity, resulting in a positive effect on the country’s economy. This will facilitate the effective transition to digital enterprises for businesses and people.
