NITDA, KAOUN plans to launch GITEX Nigeria

In collaboration, GITEX, estimated to generate $25 million, was brought to Nigeria on Thursday by KAOUN International and the National Information Technology Development Agency of Nigeria.

During the ongoing GITEX Africa in Morocco, the Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Abdullahi, and the CEO of KAOUN International, Trixie LohMirmand, signed the Memorandum of Understanding.

    Benefits of GITEX to Nigeria

According to Abdullahi, holding GITEX in Nigeria would be a massive step for the country in terms of attracting investment and commerce.

He predicted that the event could bring in $25 million in only a few short days. Abdulahi has clarified that Nigeria can export its technology to the world after acquiring this platform. Moreover, he promised visitors that they would visit Nigeria to experience its many wonders. Envision a scenario where 20,000 to 50,000 individuals visit Nigeria and spend $500 or more apiece.

In a few days, that amount will probably exceed $25 million. GITEX Global and GITEX Africa are both organised by KAOUN International, which will spearhead the effort in Nigeria.

Starting past Wednesday and continuing until Friday, GITEX Africa showcased a wide range of innovative companies and startups, together with over 350 influential investors, 600 conference speakers, and involvement from 100 government bodies.

Accelerating trade and economic diversification while boosting productivity in important areas utilising technology was declared by the NITDA’s Director General as the agency’s goal. Abdullahi said the nation can drive economic growth and development by utilising IT to increase productivity in other industries.

Gitex Nigeria is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for Nigeria to display its state-of-the-art technologies to the world, opening doors to international trade and luring investors looking to make a killing. Abdullahi took great pride in the fact that NITDA had no intention of bringing GITEX to other countries.

He says their goal is to implement a novel formula that aligns with Nigeria’s national policy. You can’t trade in isolation, says Abdullahi, and President Tinubu is quite vocal about the need to diversify the economy. He informed them that the president had ordered them to assist with some aspects of the diversification effort.

    Accelerate Africa launches Investor Portal

Accelerate Africa (AA) introduced an investor portal on Friday. The goal of this portal is to make it easy for investors to find all the startups that have taken part in AA’s programmes. The Chief Technology Officer of Future Africa, Ismail Olasunkanmi, disclosed this on his LinkedIn page.

Accelerate Africa, with headquarters in Yaounde, Cameroon, is an organisation that advises, coaches, and mentors start-ups to solve Africa’s biggest challenges.

Now, registered investors can sort startups by cohorts and other criteria. They can also access detailed information about each startup, including pitch decks, demo day presentations, founder details, valuation, fundraising amounts, and more.

The portal also syncs the founders’ and investors’ calendars so that investors can schedule private meetings. Additionally, investors can show interest in a startup by emailing the company’s founders and investors, which can start a dialogue between the two parties.

Why Accelerate Africa came to being

Accelerate Africa (A2) is an initiative by Future Africa to create a community of carefully selected African founders who will support one another as they work through the five pillars of business transformation: business development, product development, storytelling, fundraising, and team building.

This includes dinners with other successful African entrepreneurs, one-on-one sessions with founders who have graduated from top global tech accelerators, a virtual demo day with investors from all over the world, cocktails to network with prospective corporate partners and clients, and strategic follow-on funding from Future Africa and other venture capital firms that are part of our Future Africa Collective.

    The investment into Accelerate Africa

Future Africa has achieved industry-leading returns and impact through its first two funds, which invested over $10 million into 101 portfolio companies across 10 African countries. The total value of follow-on funding is over $1 billion. Through five secondary exits, they have achieved liquidity and returned more than $9 million to the investors.

Thanks to the new warehouse in Isolo, Lagos, which spans over 30,000 square metres and has 17,000 square metres of covered storage, Jumia will be able to expand its operations and provide every Nigerian with a broader selection of affordable products.

Mrs Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, commended Jumia’s journey and impact on Nigeria’s e-commerce industry on behalf of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State. She reaffirmed Lagos’ commitment to supporting businesses and growth.

According to her, this is a daring economic move towards the goal of faster, more reliable, and cheaper delivery of goods, which is essential for the expanding needs of the e-commerce industry. Initiatives like these, which boost the economy and create jobs for our people, have their proud supporters. Our local workforce will be even more robust thanks to the warehouse’s ability to generate many jobs and opportunities for skill development.

How Jumia remains applicable to Nigerian

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Natraj reaffirmed Jumia’s commitment to providing Nigerians with authentic, reasonably priced goods without hidden fees. He reassured them that Jumia’s supplier screening process is thorough.

According to Natraj, competition is good for Jumia because it increases the company’s credibility and gives customers more options to compare and choose from. Jumia is well-prepared to handle the demands of the booming e-commerce sector in Nigeria thanks to its investments in the supply chain and expansion plans.

The new facility will improve Jumia’s supply chain capabilities, allowing the company to serve more customers across Nigeria faster and scale operations up quickly. Presenters from Niger and the DRC are participating in a French-language panel discussion at the Future of Fintech stage. The hub is to host 800 startups, up from 400 the previous year. • WhatsApp now enables longer status voice notes

WhatsApp now enables longer status voice notes

Instead of the previous 30 seconds, WhatsApp now allows users to share longer voice notes in status updates, up to one minute.

With the new update, users can now share more in-depth and lengthy moments, perfect for announcements and special occasions. The ability to include longer audio notes in WhatsApp status updates was released to satisfy demand.

How to use WhatsApp’s new feature

The limited length of voice notes was a major criticism of WhatsApp status. Many users have been asking for the ability to upload longer videos to their WhatsApp status, and now they can finally have their wish granted.

Read also: Users can now post 60-second videos on WhatsApp Status

If you need to record more than the previous 30-second limit, this update is for you. It’s ideal for announcements, events, or any moment that demands more time.

Thanks to this new limit, people who prefer to send voice messages rather than lengthy texts can now share a few longer recordings instead of multiple short clips. Users can now easily share longer moments and stories with their loved ones

Be sure to update your app from either the Play Store or the App Store to take advantage of the new one-minute voice note feature.

Be aware that you’ll have to update the app to send one-minute voice messages. It’s not a simple server-side update, so if you want the newest features immediately, you should check for WhatsApp updates.

Holding down the mic button, as you would in chats, will allow you to record a voice note. You can cancel the recording with a simple slide if you change your mind.

WhatsApp is developing more features for status updates, like bigger preview windows in the status updates tray (at least for Android users) and longer voice notes.

    Previous update to WhatsApp status

In addition to being capped at 30 seconds, certain beta users will now be able to post video status updates up to one-minute long starting in March 2024. With this update, WhatsApp now offers 60-second video status options, just like Instagram and Messenger.

At the moment, users can record a video inside WhatsApp or import an existing video from their phone’s storage to use as a status update. When it came to both cases, the 30-second limit was frequently too short for users. Documenting more in-depth ideas or capturing longer periods of time.

Because of this, longer videos don’t have to be cut into several fragmented parts. A more unified experience for users across all social media platforms is the goal of the update. Users who use Instagram and Messenger interchangeably will feel more at ease with the new WhatsApp feature, which allows them to post 60-second video status updates.

Elon Musk’s AI Startup secures $6 Billion in funding for expansion

Elon Musk’s xAI, an AI startup he co-founded to compete with OpenAI, has raised $6 billion to speed up its competition.

Less than a year after its debut, xAI has received one of the most significant investments in the emerging field of developing artificial intelligence tools, thanks to the Series B round announced in a blog post on May 26. Before OpenAI introduced ChatGPT in late 2022, Musk was an early backer of artificial intelligence.

The possible risks of the technology caused him to withdraw his support for the venture, and since then, he has urged caution. Many other prominent figures in the industry echoed his call for a halt to AI development last year.

Musk’s AI as an effective competitor

In November, Musk debuted Grok, a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT that was trained on and integrated into X.com, the social network once known as Twitter. That is the most apparent result of xAI’s efforts thus far. The company’s leadership has worked at DeepMind, an Alphabet Inc., Microsoft, and Tesla division.

The business announced on its blog that it will be using the capital to launch its initial products, construct state-of-the-art infrastructure, and speed up the creation of future technologies.

Musk stated in an X post that the company was valued at $18 billion before the funding was added. Notable venture capital firms like Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz supported the fundraising, making it one of the biggest in the industry thus far.

Anthropic received approximately $4 billion from Amazon.com, Inc., while OpenAI received approximately $13 billion from Microsoft Corp.
