ABB’s Contributions to Egypt’s Sustainability through Innovative Solutions
ABB offers a comprehensive range of energy-efficient solutions that contribute to global environmental restoration and sustainable development. These solutions encompass smart building solutions, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, energy storage systems, low-voltage products and systems, and power quality solutions. They play a pivotal role in optimising the energy efficiency of buildings, facilitating the transition to electric vehicles, reducing transportation emissions, and enabling industries to harness renewable energy efficiently while minimising losses.
In pursuit of its 2030 carbon neutrality goal, which resonates with Egypt’s 2035 sustainability strategy, ABB has achieved substantial milestones. In 2022, the company achieved a remarkable 15% reduction in total energy consumption compared to its 2019 baseline, with 52% of its energy sourced from renewables. Additionally, ABB reduced its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by an impressive 65% by the end of 2022. The company has also significantly increased its utilisation of certified green and self-generated solar electricity, rising from 24% to 81% globally. ABB’s commitment to improving energy efficiency extends to its sites through energy audits, energy management systems, and transformative initiatives in buildings and production processes.
Empowering Businesses with the Energy Efficiency Movement
In alignment with Egypt’s 2035 sustainability vision, ABB introduced the innovative Energy Efficiency Movement (EEM) in Egypt earlier this year. EEM serves as a platform for fostering discussions on environmental issues and delineates ten critical steps that businesses can take to achieve net-zero emissions. By advocating affordable energy alternatives, scalable solutions, and best practices in technology, EEM encourages businesses to reduce energy consumption. This initiative has resonated globally, with over 400 businesses committing to sustainable practices. ABB invites Egyptian corporations to participate in this movement, equipping themselves with the knowledge and tools to lower greenhouse gas emissions, bolster climate resilience, and transition to a low-carbon economy.

Harnessing Green Hydrogen for Environmental Benefits
Green hydrogen, a renewable energy source, has gained prominence in Egypt as the nation harnesses solar and wind power to produce hydrogen for commercial purposes. These projects hold the potential to bolster Egypt’s economy while reducing its carbon footprint. ABB is committed to optimising energy production and supporting the transition to green hydrogen. The company’s ABB AbilityTM Energy Management – OPTIMAX for Green Hydrogen is tailored to address the specific needs of green hydrogen production and align with ABB’s automation and electrification solutions.
ABB has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency in Egypt. The company has extended its full range of products and solutions to projects aligning with the Egyptian government’s vision. Notable examples include support for the Bahr El Bakar wastewater treatment plant, the Grand Egyptian Museum, and the transformation of desert land into farmland in Toshka. ABB’s contributions to these mega projects, marked by energy efficiency, zero emissions, and innovative solutions, align with Egypt’s pursuit of sustainable development and a brighter future for its people.
ABB’s Integral Role in Egypt’s Industrial Landscape
Operating in Egypt for 45 years, ABB is deeply ingrained in the nation’s industrial landscape. The company employs over 40% of local components in its products and solutions, produced in its facilities in 10th of Ramadan city. Some ABB products exceed the threshold of 70% local components, showcasing the company’s commitment to bolstering the local industry and economy. ABB has invested more than EGP 6.2 billion in the past decade to modernise and develop its factories, positioning Egypt as a significant manufacturing hub for electricity distribution products. Moreover, ABB exports its solutions from Egypt to various regions, contributing to Egypt’s stature as a global player in the energy sector.
