Volkswagen, a global automotive giant, announced on February 23, 2025, its plans to introduce e-tractors in Nigeria.
This initiative, backed by the German government, aims to enhance agricultural mechanisation in Nigeria to support its industrial growth and food security.

Introduction of e-tractors: enhancing agricultural efficiency
Introducing e-tractors is expected to ease farmers’ work and increase yields on farmland. These tractors are designed to be multi-taskers, useful for soil preparation and post-harvest handling, similar to tested prototypes in Rwanda.
In Rwanda, Volkswagen’s e-tractors are part of the GenFarm project, which offers sustainable renewable energy farming services. The e-tractors are powered by a changeable 32 kWh lithium-ion battery, allowing operation around the clock without fossil fuels.
Collaboration and implementation
Nigeria and Germany have reinforced their economic ties, with discussions covering economic partnerships and industrial collaborations.
The German government’s support for Volkswagen’s e-tractor initiative highlights a commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

Volkswagen’s collaboration with various stakeholders, such as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), has been instrumental in implementing similar projects in Africa.
The introduction of e-tractors in Nigeria is set to follow successful pilots in other African countries, offering a model for sustainable agricultural mechanisation.
Hon. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, noted, “We welcomed Volkswagen’s plans to introduce e-tractors to Nigeria, backed by the German government, as part of efforts to enhance agricultural mechanisation,” emphasising the importance of this collaboration for Nigeria’s agricultural development.
