OpenAI, in collaboration with SoftBank and Oracle, announced the launch of the Stargate Project on Tuesday, during a White House press conference featuring tech leaders and President Donald Trump.
In its official announcement, OpenAI disclosed plans to immediately allocate $100 billion as part of a larger $500 billion investment over the next four years to build state-of-the-art AI infrastructure, create hundreds of thousands of jobs, and bolster national security.

Massive investment in AI
The Stargate Project is set to deploy $100 billion immediately, marking the first phase of its ambitious $500 billion plan. This investment will drive the development of cutting-edge AI infrastructure, starting with facilities in Texas, with potential expansion to other sites across the U.S. The initiative brings together prominent equity funders, including OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and MGX, with SoftBank handling financial responsibilities and OpenAI overseeing operations. Masayoshi Son, the visionary leader behind SoftBank, has been appointed as chairman of Stargate.
However, the project has not been without skepticism. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, voiced doubts about the funding behind the initiative in a response to OpenAI’s announcement on X (formerly Twitter). “They don’t actually have the money,” Musk wrote. In a follow-up reply, he added, “SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority.” These comments have sparked debate over the financial viability of the Stargate Project’s ambitious goals.
Key technology partners in this endeavor include Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI. The collaboration leverages years of partnerships, such as OpenAI’s longstanding relationship with NVIDIA and its more recent alliance with Oracle. These partnerships aim to enhance the capabilities of AI systems while supporting OpenAI’s ongoing work with Microsoft to advance AI models and deliver innovative products via Azure.

Stargate strategic goals and global impact
The Stargate Project is designed not only to reindustrialise the United States but also to ensure strategic capabilities that safeguard the national security of America and its allies. The initiative emphasises collaboration with firms across the data center infrastructure landscape, from power and construction to equipment and land acquisition. By fostering this ecosystem, Stargate aims to position AI as a transformative force for humanity.
OpenAI and its partners view this project as a critical step toward the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). The goal is to empower creative individuals and industries to harness AI’s potential for the betterment of society. “We believe this step is vital to enabling humanity to elevate itself through AI,” OpenAI stated.
During the announcement, President Trump described the Stargate Project as “the largest AI infrastructure project in history” and praised its potential to create 100,000 jobs in the U.S.
Despite the skepticism expressed by some, the Stargate Project remains poised to deliver immense economic and technological benefits.
