Accra AMA launches mobile payments for businesses

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has unveiled a mobile payment platform designed to simplify the process of acquiring Business Operating Permits (BOPs) and Property Rates.

On Monday, it was announced that businesses and residents could pay permits and property rates via shortcodes *222*33# and *222*55#, improving convenience and efficiency.

A step towards digital transformation

This move reflects AMA’s commitment to modernising public services.

“The manual way of distributing bills and mobilising revenue was fraught with issues,” stated Noble Atsu Ahadzi, Head of Budget at AMA.

The new system enables users to pay from their mobile devices, eliminating the need for physical visits to AMA offices. It also supports various payments, including market tolls and parking fees, promoting a more regulated business environment in Accra.

Enhancing service delivery

The platform is designed to be user-friendly and accessible even on basic mobile phones. Users can check bills via SMS or a dedicated customer portal, ensuring transparency and real-time monitoring of payments.

“This level of convenience and transparency is unprecedented,” Ahadzi emphasised.

Business owners have expressed positive feedback; Sylvia Dzoboku from SYLTTEQ noted, “We receive messages on our phones, which is far more secure and convenient.”

By digitising these processes, the AMA aims to reduce corruption opportunities and enhance accountability in revenue collection.
