A $35.5 million Series A funding round led by Blossom Capital has now been won by Praktika, a language learning software, so that it can keep growing. The round comes after Creator Ventures and Blue Wire Capital led a previously unreported $2.5 million seed round.
In most language-learning apps, you communicate with a machine by selecting alternatives or swiping away wrong answers.
Language-learning software Praktika takes a different approach; It enables you to construct personalised AI-powered avatars to mimic a private instructor, using tone of voice and emotions to make language learning more natural.
With 1.2 million regular daily users in 100 countries, Praktika says it made almost $20 million in sales in the last 12 months.

What accents can AI avatars speak in Praktika?
Praktika’s AI avatars “tailor” teachings and speak American, British, Asian, and Indian accents. Using the avatar to engage with the lessons should make them more personalised.
The company’s founding team, Adam Turaev (CEO), Anton Marin (CTO) and Ilya Chernyakov (CPO), previously built Cleverbots, an AI service business that counted companies like Coca-Cola, Kimberly-Clark, and AstraZeneca among its clients.
“Most language learning apps are all about human interaction with a human tutor. Or it is ‘machine-to-human’ interaction involving clicks and drag and drops,” Turaev stated.
But we’re the only tone-of-voice software that mimics human conversation. The artificial intelligence avatar technique, which is natural to language learning, was our first. It’s what sets it apart from other apps on the market.”
He remarked, “We orchestrate different LLMs, but we’re an AI-native company.” A startup uses AI. We utilised Gemini, Claude, Mistral, GPT-4, and GP Turbo. We also try alternative models. After lots of training data, the software still learns. Terabytes of human-AI interaction data. Anonymised data strengthens models.”
The Praktika founders are harnessing their AI skills to offer affordable, customised language instruction with AI teachers. Other learning apps have abused youngsters for too long.
Blossom Capital managing partner Ophelia Brown stated, “The team’s determination to build a global challenger has translated into one of the fastest-growing early-stage consumer AI companies globally.
