Coursera’s Global Skills Report 2023 shows Nigeria has the weakest skills of any country in the world.
In 2023, Coursera ranked 100 countries. Nigeria was at the very bottom of the list, coming in at number 100.
Coursera said that it first checked how good each learner was at each skill on the platform to come up with the skill proficiency score. Then, it adds up all of those skills to get information.
One way to figure out how good a country is at a particular skill is to take the average of all the pupils’ scores in that country. Then, Coursera uses percentile scores to compare these skill levels.
The study lists 100 countries. A country with a score of 100% is at the top, and a country with a score of 0% is at the bottom.

Data limitations
Although Coursera said that student’s skill levels in a country are linked to good economic indicators, they also said that these results do not necessarily show the skills of the whole population in that country because the data only shows trends among Coursera students.
It also said that a person’s ability to access and use Coursera depends on many things, such as their internet connection, school background or training, and the rules and customs of their area.
Learner gender, age, and location are used. Social and economic conditions may also affect findings. Coursera may attract students in a weak economy. Through business partnerships, we can quickly enrol thousands of additional students. The report stated, “Our main goal is to show what is reasonably happening across the Coursera ecosystem.”
The company added that sometimes, its results capture what is happening across an entire economy, while other times, the demographics and behaviour of Coursera learners mean that some results should not be extrapolated or interpreted as representing broad populations.
Growth in enrollments
Despite being ranked last among countries using the platform to improve their skills, Nigeria has the fourth-highest year-over-year growth rate for Professional certificate enrollments and the third-highest number of overall enrollments. It shows that learners are very motivated to prepare for in-demand digital roles.
Learners’ best skills are their business knowledge, while their best areas for growth are technology and data science. 1.7 million Nigerians were learning on the site in December 2023, according to the report.
Also, 79% of Nigerian students are learning on their phones, and 33% are women.
