Ghana has launched a state of the art mineral testing technology, PhotonAssay, as part of plans towards promoting environmental sustainability in the extractive sector.
This cutting-edge system, known as PhotonAssay, is poised to replace the conventional fire assay method for measuring gold concentrations in samples, offering significant advantages in terms of environmental impact and precision.

Out with Fire Assay, In with PhotonAssay
PhotonAssay represents a transformative departure from the traditional fire assay technique. The latter method, although effective in determining gold concentrations, has been associated with severe environmental repercussions. It involves a complex and hazardous process that utilises toxic chemicals and necessitates sample fusion at temperatures as high as 1,200 degrees centigrade. This process not only poses environmental threats but also carries substantial safety risks.
PhotonAssay, in stark contrast, is celebrated for its precision, eco-friendliness, and safety. This technology operates without the use of chemicals and does not inflict harm on the environment. Its non-destructive approach aligns perfectly with the global call for environmentally responsible practices in the mining industry.
George Mireku Duker commended Intertek Minerals Ghana, a prominent mining service company, for its investment in the photon assay laboratory. He highlighted the crucial role that a diversified array of expertise and technologies plays in the responsible and sustainable exploitation of a country’s natural resource endowment.
Ghana boasts abundant mineral resources that underpin its development. Currently, the nation is host to around 500 exploration projects, 23 large-scale mining operations, and 235 service companies engaged in mineral extraction. Given the capital-intensive and risk-laden nature of the mining sector, Duker emphasised the importance of optimization, cost control, innovation, and resilience throughout the mining value chain.
