Zoom, the popular video-conferencing platform, has taken swift action to address concerns regarding the potential training of its artificial intelligence (AI) models using customer calls. 

The company recently updated its terms of service to clarify that audio, video, and chat data will not be utilized for AI training without explicit user consent. 

This move follows user backlash and apprehensions over the wording of the initial terms that were perceived to allow AI training using customer-generated content.

Transparent Approach to AI Model Training

In March, Zoom users raised concerns after noticing modifications to the company’s terms of service that led to speculations about potential AI model training on their customer calls. Responding to these concerns, Zoom reaffirmed its commitment to privacy and transparency. In a blog post, the company stated that it never utilized audio, video, or chat data for AI purposes without obtaining explicit consent from users.

Zoom’s decision to update its terms of service was driven by a desire to be more transparent about its data usage practices. The company’s new terms explicitly state, “Zoom will not use audio, video or chat customer content to train our artificial intelligence models without your consent.” This clarification aims to provide users with a clear understanding of how their data will be used to enhance AI features.

Zoom unveiled new AI-powered features in June, allowing clients to summarize meetings without the need to record the entire session. While these features were initially offered as a free trial, concerns emerged about the potential implications of the terms of service changes on user data privacy.

Data protection specialist Robert Bateman expressed reservations about the initial terms, noting that the vague language could grant Zoom substantial leeway in using user data for various purposes. The potential risks associated with these contractual provisions underscored the importance of ensuring transparent data practices.

Zoom’s latest update seeks to address these concerns by offering a transparent consent process for users who decide to enable generative AI features.
