Uber announced the launch of its innovative Courier Bakkie service in South Africa on Thursday, marking a significant step for the company as it aims to cater to the unique needs of local consumers and businesses.
Thanks to this new service, users can now request on-demand bakkies—light trucks that are frequently utilised in South Africa—for transporting large goods up to one tonne in weight. Initially available in Johannesburg, the service is set to expand to Cape Town and Durban shortly after that.
Meeting local needs
Uber chose to launch the Courier Bakkie service because it is thoroughly aware of South African customs and logistics needs.
As noted by Mnotho Mtshali, Uber’s Senior Operations Manager for the Middle East and Africa, “South Africans love their bakkies because they are practical and versatile.”
This sentiment resonates with many residents who often need reliable transportation for bulky items such as furniture, appliances, and catering supplies.
The timing of the launch aligns perfectly with the festive season, allowing families to manage their holiday preparations efficiently.
Mtshali added, “This is perfect for people balancing festive season preparations with busy schedules,” emphasising how this service can ease logistical burdens during a hectic time.
The Courier Bakkie service is designed for individuals and aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that frequently require delivery solutions but may lack the resources for dedicated logistics. This service transports car components and building supplies, letting businesses focus on growth rather than logistics.
“We care deeply about supporting small businesses,” Mtshali stated, highlighting Uber’s commitment to empowering entrepreneurs in South Africa.

A new era for Uber in South Africa
This launch marks a global first for Uber, making South Africa the only country where users can request bakkies through the app.
The Courier Bakkie option is integrated into the existing Uber app under the “Rides” section, making it easy for customers to select their desired service. Users set their destination and request a bakkie for their transportation needs. Additionally, Uber has rebranded its previous package delivery service as “Courier,” reflecting its expanded offerings.
Uber’s partnership with SkyNet Worldwide Express further enhances this service by ensuring that goods are delivered safely and on time. This collaboration is crucial for building trust among users concerned about transporting valuable items.
