  • Airtel Uganda commissions mast sites in Eastern Uganda to boost digital access

Airtel Uganda commissions mast sites in Eastern Uganda to boost digital access

Airtel Uganda, in collaboration with the district authorities of Soroti, Tororo, and Bugiri, commissioned freshly erected and upgraded masts in Eastern Uganda on Thursday. Celebrations were held at the Asuret Sub-County Offices in Soroti and Kointario Primary School in Malaba, Tororo District.

Airtel has stayed true to its pledge to expand digital access throughout Uganda since switching from “A Smartphone Network” to “A Reason to Imagine” and attaining full 4G network in 2019.

These new sites are part of initiatives to improve digital inclusion and connection, which will ultimately improve livelihoods and spur economic growth for more Ugandans.

    Importance of financial digital inclusion

Wongani Muthiya, Director of Growth Markets, spoke on behalf of Soumendra Sahu, Managing Director of Airtel Uganda, and emphasised the importance of financial digital inclusion.

Mr. Muthiya emphasised Airtel’s dedication to fostering better connection in order to support the economic goals of Soroti’s young and expanding population.

“We believe this partnership will support the community, especially the agricultural sector. Thank you for having us here — and please, do not share your Airtel Money PIN with anyone,” said Mr Muthiya.

    Airtel Uganda’s primary goal

In agreement, David Birungi, Airtel’s Public Relations Manager, said that the company’s primary goal has always been to facilitate economic change by bringing people and companies together.

“That’s why we are here today — to continue expanding and improving our network.”

The economic potential of better connection was highlighted by the welcoming remarks given by local leaders to Airtel Uganda.

In Soroti District, Michael Olugu, Head of the Committee on Works and Natural Resources, who spoke on behalf of the LC5, thanked Airtel for the network upgrades and promised the district’s support.

Embracing digital advancement to keep up with global development

To keep up with global development, Soroti must embrace digital advancement, stressed Paul Eseru, Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Soroti.

“Airtel is a strong presence — not just in Uganda, but across many countries. Last year, while I was in Dubai, I was able to seamlessly communicate with my people back home — thanks to Airtel’s reliable connectivity. I’m here to recognise the significant contribution Airtel Uganda has made,” Mr. Eseru said.

U.S. Embassy updates visa requirements for Nigerian applicants

The U.S. Embassy has announced updated requirements for Nigerian visa applicants, which will take effect starting April 22, 2025.

As part of the new guidelines, all applicants attending interviews at the U.S. Consulates in Abuja and Lagos must present a DS-160 visa application confirmation page. This confirmation must include a barcode that begins with “AA” and ends with “00” (two zeroes).

The barcode on the DS-160 confirmation page must exactly match the one used to schedule the visa appointment. Applicants who fail to provide a matching barcode will be denied entry into the consular section and will not be allowed to proceed with their interview.

The statement reads, “Starting April 22, 2025, all visa applicants in Abuja and Lagos must bring a DS-160 visa application form with a confirmation/barcode number (starting with AA and followed by 00 – two zeroes) that matches the one used to make their appointment online. You also must make your appointment in the location you selected when filling out your DS-160.”

“Matching Barcode Numbers: If the confirmation/barcode number on your DS-160 form does not match the one you used to book your appointment, you will not be allowed to enter the Consular Section or attend your visa interview,” the statement added.

    Barcode cannot be reused

It is recommended that candidates confirm the alignment at least two weeks before their scheduled visit.

Additionally, the statement made it clear that DS-160 forms that have already been utilised cannot be reused. If there is a discrepancy, candidates are advised to make a correction request by logging into their AVITS account no later than ten days prior to the interview.

The US mission noted, “At least two weeks before your interview, please double-check that the barcode number on your DS-160 form matches the one you used to schedule your appointment.”

“You cannot reuse a DS-160 from a previous application,” it added.

“If your DS-160 barcode is incorrect, you must log into your AVITS account at least 10 days before your appointment to create a support ticket requesting correction of your barcode number,” it emphasised.

Visa appointment should align with location listed on DS-160 form

The U.S. mission also encouraged candidates to make sure their visa appointment is set at the address listed on their DS-160 form.

“If you are turned away from your appointment because your barcode numbers do not match, once you correct the problem, you will need to book a new appointment to proceed with your visa application. You may book a new appointment by logging into your AVITS account at If your visa fee has expired, you may have to pay a new fee before booking,” it added.

Since January 1, all visa applicants must make two trips to the US Consulate General in Lagos as part of the application process. These modifications are a part of continuous efforts to expedite visa processing and lower administrative errors.

  • AfDB earmarks $100 million to establish Nigerian Youth Entrepreneurship Investment Bank

AfDB earmarks $100 million to establish Nigerian Youth Entrepreneurship Investment Bank

According to the African Development Bank (AfDB), $100 million has been allocated for the Nigerian Youth Entrepreneurship Investment Bank’s formation.

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President and Chairman of the AfDB Board of Directors, made the disclosure during the 14th Convocation Lecture at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja on Friday, themed “Advancing Africa’s Positioning within Global Development and Geographical Dynamics.”

Initiative to offer business development services

According to Adesina, the action was taken to financially liberate Nigerian youth and offer business development services, technical help, equity, quasi-equity, and debt finance for young people’s companies throughout Africa.

The AfDB’s president noted that the solution to unemployment lies in entrepreneurship. Africa is currently seeing a boom in entrepreneurship, with 22% of its working-age population launching their own company—the highest percentage globally, according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, 2020.

He underlined that the industries of technology, retail, services, and agriculture are the main areas of entrepreneurship concentration.

For creative young African entrepreneurs, the future is extremely promising. This is fueled by the digital economy’s explosive growth, which is expected to boost Africa’s GDP by $180 billion and $712 billion by 2050.

He further emphasised, “Africa’s startup ecosystem is taking advantage of the digital economy with more than 600 active startup hubs on the continent.”

“Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Egypt have become centres of tech innovations, driven by youth entrepreneurs in health tech, Agric-tech and e-commerce,” he said.

Addressing Africa’s problems with AfDB’s strong financial development strategy

Adesina claims that because the global financial system has failed to adequately handle Africa’s problems, the AfDB put together a strong financial development strategy for the continent.

Concerns about debt, climate change, and access to more funding were among the difficulties mentioned by Adesina.

Additionally, the AfDB and its partners approved $614 million for the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises program, which aims to create over six million jobs and contribute $6.4 billion to the Nigerian economy by supporting small and medium-sized businesses in the creative and digital industries in obtaining financing.

The program is part of a strong strategic partnership that includes the AfDB, the Agence Francaise de Developpment, the Islamic Development Bank, and the Bank of Industry.

    Educational challenges facing African youths

Despite the progress over time, the bulk of Africa’s youth continue to trail behind in their educational attainment, according to the AfDB.

For comparison’s sake, he noted that in Japan, 98.9 percent of young people have completed secondary school, whereas only 43 percent of young people in Africa have done so.

In terms of higher education, the disparity is glaring: barely 10 percent of African youth are enrolled in higher education, compared to 60% of Japanese young people.

African youth have a lower enrollment rate in globally dominant educational sectors among those seeking higher education.

“While 30 percent of Japanese youth in universities pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, less than 25 percent of students in sub-Saharan Africa are in these fields,” he emphasised.

“This puts Africa behind in terms of its preparedness for the fourth industrial revolution, especially in fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, and cloud computing, which are revolutionizing the world,” Adesina added.

AfDB collaborates with AU to address the challenges

In order to address the education gap, he said the bank was already collaborating with the African Union to create a $300 million African Education, Science, and Technology Innovation Fund.

“Africa is the only economy in the world without a buffer in case of emergency,” Adesina bemoaned, and encouraged its leaders to support technological advancement, encourage the development of natural resources, and make significant investments in energy.

Former INEC Chairman commends AfDB’s President

Prof. Attahiru Jega, a former INEC Chairman and the event’s chairman, had earlier claimed that Adesina has given Africans the confidence to comprehend the work that has been done to realign the continent.

Jega valued the part the AfDB had played in making sure Africa pursued the course of self-sustaining growth and realised its full potential.

He referred to Adesina as Nigeria’s ambassador to the world since everything he said in his talk alluded to initiatives to guarantee Africa’s independence and follow a path of its own growth.

According to NOUN Vice Chancellor Prof. Olufemi Peters, the convention lecturer this year was specifically selected so that Nigerians might benefit from his development experience.

According to Peters, Adesina’s experience had brought him numerous worldwide honours, which is why the institution chose to offer him an honorary doctorate in Doctor of Humane Letters.

  • Trump excludes phones, computers from global reciprocal tariffs

Trump excludes phones, computers from global reciprocal tariffs

The administration of President Donald Trump has decided to exempt smartphones, laptops, and other important electronic devices from its broad reciprocal tariff policies. This decision is expected to ease pressure on both consumers and manufacturers of electronics worldwide.

A Bloomberg article said that the exemptions, which were secretly announced by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection late Friday, exempted a number of in-demand technology products from both the 10 percent worldwide baseline charge and Trump’s 125 percent China-targeted tariff.

Hard drives, computer processors, memory chips, laptop computers, smartphones, and other things that are rarely made in the U.S. and would take years of investment to localise production are on the exclusion list.

Apple and Samsung protected from tariffs’ pressure

The administration successfully protects big electronics companies like Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. from sudden cost increases by excluding these products while simultaneously reducing the possibility of price increases for final consumers.

Furthermore, equipment utilised in the production of semiconductors was exempt. For businesses like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), which has declared ambitious ambitions to expand in the United States, as well as for the larger chipmaking industry, this is a major move.

The report did point out that since the exclusions are based on an earlier presidential order intended to avoid cumulative tariff burdens across industries, the relief might only last temporarily.

Analysts predict that future tariffs on these goods, particularly those aimed at Chinese imports, may still be subject to fresh and maybe lower tariffs.

    Semiconductors excluded from tariff

Semiconductors are a prominent category on the exclusion list. Trump has previously declared intentions to slap targeted tariffs on semiconductor products, although such steps have yet to be executed.

His trade policy has limited sector-specific tariffs to 25% so far, although the final amount for semiconductors is unclear.

Following the tariff conflicts that resulted in a 125% charge on Chinese imports, industry analysts cautioned that the prices of several Chinese-made electronic items could suffer greatly.

With iPhone costs predicted to rise threefold, Dan Ives, Global Head of Technology Research at Wedbush Securities, specifically cautioned that tariffs might significantly affect tech consumers and international corporations like Apple.

  • Global mobile money accounts exceed 2 billion, Sub-Saharan Africa leads in active users

Global mobile money accounts exceed 2 billion, Sub-Saharan Africa leads in active users

According to the GSM Association (GSMA), mobile money achieved two noteworthy milestones worldwide in 2024, which include surpassing two billion registered accounts and recording half a billion monthly active users.

This was disclosed in its State of Industry Report for Mobile Money 2025, released on Tuesday.

The report highlights that the increase in new accounts and monthly activity in East and West Africa kept Sub-Saharan Africa as the most active mobile money region globally.

East Africa was the primary driver of monthly active account growth in 2024, followed by Southeast Asia and West Africa, according to the research.

Although sub-Saharan Africa continued to be the world’s most active mobile money region, it was pointed out that the East Asia-Pacific region was also making great strides.

“East Asia-Pacific recorded the second-fastest growth rate for active monthly accounts, only surpassed by the Middle East and North Africa.”

“Its growth rate is supported by enabling regulatory environments in key markets such as Cambodia, Fiji, the Philippines, and Vietnam,” the report explained.

The GSMA is a non-profit trade organization that represents the interests of mobile network operators around the world.

According to the GSMA report, “The mobile money industry took 18 years, from 2001, to reach one billion registered accounts and 250 million active users.”

“Remarkably, it doubled its size in the subsequent five years.”

Mobile money record 108 billion transactions, reaching $1.68 trillion

According to the most recent study, there was a strong double-digit increase in the number and value of transactions made using mobile money accounts in 2024.

According to the report, mobile money accounts handled almost 108 billion transactions in 2024, reaching more than 1.68 trillion dollars.

According to the report, transaction values surged by 16 percent and transaction volumes by 20 percent year over year. This is a significant improvement above the 13 percent growth seen in 2023.

    Barriers to Mobile Money acceptance

However, despite the notable advancements made in mobile money worldwide, the report pointed out that a number of obstacles still stood in the way of its broader acceptance.

The gender disparity in mobile money ownership is a significant obstacle to further adoption, according to the GSMA survey.

“Among 12 countries surveyed, eight continue to exhibit a gender gap, with little improvement observed since 2023.”

“Limited awareness of mobile money services and low digital financial literacy are identified as significant barriers, particularly affecting women,” the association said.

The study did point out a good trend, though, pointing out that women who do have mobile money accounts are almost as likely as men to have used them frequently in the previous 30 days.

Digital financial literacy programs to encourage financial inclusion

According to the GSMA, approximately 60 percent of mobile money providers have started digital financial literacy programs to address these enduring issues and encourage broader financial inclusion.

The GSMA claims that these programs are intended to increase people’s financial literacy and promote the long-term use of mobile money services.

In his remarks, GSMA Director-General Vivek Badrinath emphasized the significance of funding financial literacy initiatives.

“These programmes empower underserved populations and create new opportunities for informed financial decision-making,” he said.

Badrinath emphasised that mobile money has become a potent force behind economic expansion and financial inclusion.

“However, its continued success depends on supportive regulatory environments that promote innovation and accessibility and help unlock the full socio-economic potential,” he said.

    Ancillary financial services

According to the report, mobile money providers are increasingly providing ancillary financial services in addition to standard transactions. It pointed out that these comprised insurance, savings, and credit products, suggesting that the mobile money ecosystem had matured.

According to the research, credit services were offered by 44 percent of mobile money providers as of June 2024, making it the most widely available ancillary financial product.

However, it pointed out that about one-third of suppliers provided savings services. According to the research, insurance is still the least popular ancillary service, with only about 28 percent of suppliers providing it.

    Importance of collaboration among stakeholders

The director general emphasised how important it is for governments, regulators, and financial service providers to work together.

According to him, cooperation was necessary to guarantee that mobile money will always be available, reasonably priced, and secure for all users.
