    Three severely wounded as CNG cylinder explodes in Benin gas station

    No fewer than three persons were hospitalised after a cylinder storing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) exploded at NIPCO gas station in Aduwawa area of Benin, Edo state.

    A viral video showed a mangled vehicle with the boot of the car torn open as bystanders gathered and commiserated with a man who sustained minor injuries.

    The Police confirmed that the three victims were all employees of NIPCO filling station and that they were receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

    “It’s an Audi car whose CNG cylinder exploded at Nipco filling station, injured 3 persons who are currently responding to treatment at UBTH,” Peoples Gazette cited Moses Yamu, Edo police public relations officer as saying.

    The explosion has stirred worries regarding the safety of the CNG given that President Bola Tinubu’s administration plans to convert petrol vehicles to CNG as a cost-cutting measure for citizens due to the expensive price of premium motor spirit (PMS) which costs over N1000 per litre.

    The Presidential CNG Initiative said the cylinder that exploded was neither fit  nor approved for CNG storage. The Initiative said top security agents were on top of the matter and investigating the incident.

    “A close examination of the cylinder in question in Benin City shows it was welded and modified and not approved for use for CNG,” the PCNGI said in a statement on Thursday. “The police, regulatory authorities and management of NIPCO are undertaking a painstaking investigation of the incident and we are coordinating with them.”

    “This incident reiterates the impetus of the PCNGI and our partners  on the soon to be launched Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System at SON, NMDPRA, NADDC and FRSC to tackle any bad actors in the ecosystem that seeks to make this safer, cheaper, cleaner and more reliable source of fueling risky for all.”

    PCNGI asked relevant stakeholders to cooperate with the government in ensuring that all Nigerians followed due process and approved gas stations ro convert their vehicles to  run on CNG.

    “We also call on all stakeholders to cooperate with the new system of regulation and ensure full compliance. Only accredited conversion centers must be patronized and safe handling of CNG just like petrol ensures safety of all,” the PCNG said.

    The Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (SEWA), in collaboration with the Sharjah Hamriyah Independent Power Company (SHIPCO) and GE Vernova, has announced the commencement of commercial operations at the Hamriyah Independent Power Plant (IPP).

    This state-of-the-art combined cycle facility is recognized as the most efficient gas power plant currently operating in the Middle East and Africa (MEA), making a significant contribution to reducing the carbon intensity of power generation in Sharjah.

    The Hamriyah IPP is powered by three GE Vernova 9HA.01 turbines, which offer substantially higher efficiency compared to previous power generation assets in the region. This efficiency improvement is anticipated to allow SEWA to generate an additional 1.8 gigawatts (GW) of power while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by up to 4 million tons per year. This reduction is equivalent to taking approximately one million cars off the roads in the UAE.

    GE Vernova’s Integral Role

    The project was completed with the support of GE Vernova’s Gas Power business, which provided turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services. This included the installation of three 9HA.01 gas turbines powering three H84 generators, three STF-D650 steam turbines powering three A74 generators, and three heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) for the facility. GE Vernova is also set to provide parts, repairs, and maintenance services for the power generation assets at the site for a period of around 25 years.

    His Excellency Saeed Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chairman of SEWA, emphasized their commitment to meeting the growing energy needs in Sharjah with reliable, affordable, and sustainable power. The Hamriyah IPP plays a crucial role in SEWA’s 2030 Roadmap and their strategy to enhance the grid with lower carbon power. The project is expected to meet up to 40% of Sharjah’s electricity requirements, contributing significantly to the region’s energy security.

    Omar Almulla, Chairman of SHIPCO, highlighted the significance of the milestone at the Hamriyah IPP. This accomplishment was the result of over 11 million hours of work by more than 1,500 people from over 20 countries, representing SEWA, SHIPCO, GE Vernova, and other stakeholders. The project reflects a collective commitment to increasing power capacity in the UAE while reducing the carbon intensity of electricity generation to tackle global climate challenges.

    Innovative Energy Solutions

    GE Vernova’s H-class gas turbine technology has set records for combined cycle efficiency, with over 140 units ordered to date and more than 1.8 million operating hours. The technology offers flexibility to quickly adjust power output, aiding in grid stabilization as variable renewable energy sources become more prominent. It also has the capability to burn up to 50% hydrogen when blended with natural gas, with future plans aiming for up to 100% hydrogen use. Additionally, a combined cycle configuration with a post-combustion capture system is in development to potentially reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 90%.

    Elumelu calls for gas, power sector reforms at NBA conference

    Tony Elumelu, a renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist, has called for more investment in Nigeria’s power sector to address the country’s energy challenges.

    Elumelu, who is the founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) and the chairman of Transcorp Power Limited, made this call recently in Abuja at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) annual general conference.

    In his address, Elumelu expressed his concern over the “ironic” situation where Nigeria possesses substantial gas reserves but struggles to efficiently operate its power plants due to a lack of gas supply. He emphasized the importance of establishing regulatory frameworks that can ensure a consistent and robust power supply to support critical sectors such as healthcare and industries.

    He cited the example of the TransAfam Power Plant, which has an installed capacity of 1000 megawatts but could not receive enough gas for testing the 240 megawatts fast power turbines acquired from General Electric (GE).

    He said GE has threatened to pull out of the project because Nigeria could not provide 65mm scuffs of gas needed for the comprehensive testing of the installed fast power plant.

    “For context, 240 megawatts of electricity can power about one million homes in Nigeria,” he said.

    He blamed the situation on a “short-sighted regulatory regime and self-serving policies” that hinder gas production and utilisation in the country.

    He said Nigeria has idle gas fields, and there is so much private capital to make the needed investments for gas production, but the regulatory environment is not conducive.

    Regulatory reforms

    Elumelu urged the government to create regulatory structures that deliver to hospitals and industries the sustainable, robust power supply that the country so urgently needs.

    He said Nigeria needs to reform its power sector and attract more investment to improve its electricity generation, transmission and distribution.

    He also advocated for the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), which has been pending for over a decade, to provide a clear legal framework for the oil and gas industry.

    He said the PIB would help to address some of the challenges facing the sector, such as fiscal terms, environmental issues, community development, local content and governance.

    He said the PIB would also help to unlock Nigeria’s potential as a gas hub in Africa and enhance its contribution to global energy security.

    Women empowerment

    Elumelu also stressed the importance of investing in women as a way of promoting economic development and poverty reduction.

    He said women are key drivers of entrepreneurship and innovation in Africa and should be supported to succeed.

    He said his foundation, TEF, has empowered over 15,000 African entrepreneurs with seed capital, training and mentorship since 2015, with about 30% of them being women.

    He said his businesses also promote gender equality and women’s leadership, as women occupy key positions in his organisations.

    “Let us invest in our women. When a woman succeeds, families and communities are lifted out of poverty. It is no surprise that in my businesses, women lead and flourish,” he said.

    Elumelu also expressed concern over the security challenges facing Nigeria, such as banditry, kidnapping, oil theft, pipeline vandalism and transmission line cuts.

    He called for collective efforts to tackle the security threats and restore peace and stability in the country.

    He said security is essential for economic growth and social development, as well as for attracting investment and creating jobs.
