AXIAN Telecom signs GSMA Humanitarian Connectivity Charter to enhance disaster management

AXIAN Telecom, a prominent pan-African telecom company, declared on Tuesday that it has signed the GSMA Humanitarian Connectivity Charter (HCC).

The HCC was established by the GSMA in 2015 with the goal of improving Mobile Network Operators’ (MNOs’) capacity for planning, reaction, and recovery in the event of rapid onset catastrophes, including natural disasters.

AXIAN Telecom makes this significant move through its MNOs in Tanzania, Madagascar, Comoros, Senegal, and Togo, which were recently streamlined under the name Yas.

In addition to creating best practice guidelines for the mobile industry before, during, and after catastrophes, the HCC’s guiding principles seek to give communities impacted by disasters resilient and easily available connectivity.

Sharing timely information that helps communities, first responders, and the larger mobile ecosystem is its main goal.

Early Warning System to manage disasters

As part of its commitment, AXIAN Telecom is working with the GSMA through Yas in Madagascar to create an Early Warning System (EWS) that will improve planning and response to disasters.

This system, which is supported by four pillars, enhances community and national response capacities by gathering data, monitoring hazards, conducting risk assessments, and issuing timely alerts.

In the wake of Cyclone Chido’s devastating impact on Mayotte on December 14, AXIAN Telecom activated its resources to support the affected communities.

Restoring damaged mobile infrastructure, facilitating free connection between Comoros and Mayotte via Yas Comoros, the operator of AXIAN Telecom, and collaborating with Free-Groupe Iliad and Télécoms Sans Frontières to organise both human and material assistance are all part of their relief operations.

These initiatives demonstrate AXIAN Telecom’s dedication to promoting humanitarian connectivity throughout all of its service areas and local communities.

    AXIAN Telecom, GSMA’s comments

Commenting on the signing, AXIAN Telecom CEO Hassan Jaber said: “For many years, people have been affected by disasters, with the Cyclone Chido serving as a stark reminder of the devastating toll these events can take on communities. AXIAN Telecom is deeply remorseful for the hardship the people of Mayotte continue to endure and remains committed to supporting our communities.

We are determined to leverage technology for good and help our communities be better prepared for such unfortunate events. While the initiative is less than a decade old, we commend the progress made so far and are excited to once again collaborate with GSMA, beginning with EWS4ALL. This project will be pivotal, particularly in our East African and Indian ocean-based regions, which are highly vulnerable to natural disasters.”

Kimberly Brown, Head of Mobile for Humanitarian Innovation, GSMA added: “Connectivity is a lifeline for emergency affected populations, the GSMA’s Humanitarian Connectivity Charter fosters industry-wide cooperation in times of crisis, and we are pleased to welcome AXIAN Telecom as a signatory.

Mobile network operators continue to play a critical role in humanitarian preparedness, response, and recovery, harnessing mobile technology to support communities in need. AXIAN Telecom’s efforts in Madagascar, including the development of an Early Warning System, exemplify this commitment – ensuring communities are better equipped to anticipate and mitigate disasters. This is a valuable contribution to the Early Warnings for All initiative.”

The funding from the African Development Bank not only underscores the immense digital potential of the continent but also highlights the critical role of collaboration in driving sustainable development,” said Hassan Jaber, CEO of AXIAN Telecom.

Jaber underlined that the African Development Bank’s assistance will strengthen the business’s current projects, which include promoting creative ways to close the digital divide and increasing access to reasonably priced internet while fitting in perfectly with their mobile businesses’ recent makeover under the Yas brand.

He stated, “Yas represents our commitment to empowering a young, dynamic, and digitally connected population, embracing every opportunity with a resounding ‘YES.’ Together, this collaboration will help drive meaningful change across Africa’s digital landscape, furthering our shared mission of digital and financial inclusion.”

Global pioneers in technology and digital inclusion, Ericsson and AXIAN Telecom, have teamed up to use the Ericsson Educate platform to digitally upskill African youths in areas like 5G, AI, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

According to a statement released on Wednesday, the partnership demonstrates both Groups’ longstanding dedication to digital inclusion with Ericsson’s vast experience in educational programs and AXIAN Telecom’s understanding of local community needs.

The partnership aims to make high-quality educational tools and resources accessible and develop the digital skills that the workforce of the future will need.

Ericsson’s Connect to Learn program has so far touched more than 485,000 students in 43 countries. This partnership seeks to increase digital inclusion in education even more.

Students have access to a variety of learning options through the Ericsson Educate platform in fields like 5G, automation, cloud computing, telecommunications, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Students who complete these courses will gain skills that are in demand in the modern digital economy and receive badges that demonstrate their accomplishments.

Partnership to focus on university students across Africa

In this collaboration, AXIAN Telecom’s dedication to digital youth empowerment—which focuses on giving young adults the necessary skills—will be crucial.

This will involve AXIAN Telecom focussing on training university students throughout Africa, matching the goals of Ericsson Educate’s programs, and bolstering its current programs at African universities.

AXIAN Telecom and Ericsson to collaborate with local partners to address local needs

To address the requirements of young people in each market, AXIAN Telecom and Ericsson will work with local partners in each of the countries where this cooperation is implemented to create customised plans. By ensuring the project’s durability and local relevance, this strategy contributes to the long-term success of digital education.

AXIAN Telecom laid the foundation for this strategic partnership earlier this year when its senior teams visited the Ericsson Imagine Studio in Kista, Sweden, and reiterated their shared objective of promoting digital inclusion via education. This relationship comes after Ericsson’s expanding engagement to promote social impact with AXIAN Telecom.

Earlier this year, the Senegal Ministry of National Education started a successful Connect to Learn relationship with AXIAN Telecom’s subsidiary Yas Sénégal. This partnership expands on that success.

Five public elementary schools now have a digital instructional ecosystem thanks to this program, which opened the door for other projects like this Memorandum of Understanding.

The leaders of the two companies are excited about the partnership which identifies education as the cornerstone to a nation’s progress.

Hassan Jaber, CEO of AXIAN Telecom, said the partnership “marks a transformative step in fostering digital education across Africa. By combining AXIAN Telecom’s deep understanding of the needs and dynamics of local communities with Ericsson’s educational platforms.”

Yas to become a Pan-African powerhouse with unified brand

The Yas brand aligns with AXIAN Telcom’s objective to become a pan-African powerhouse that provides more effective customer service and solutions-driven innovations that make a big difference.

The decision to launch Yas as a single brand will promote cross-market synergies that enable cost-effectiveness, cross-border customer experiences and the sharing of best practices.

Although the corporate structure in existing territories will not change, the new brand prepares the organisation for continent-wide expansion by targeting a more internationally-oriented and connected audience.

By offering a personal connection to customers, dependable service, and an intuitive user experience, the mobile network providers operating under the new Yas brand will more than ever assist individuals and businesses in thriving in an increasingly digital environment.

“Goodbye” AXIAN Telecom Board Chair tells other brands

AXIAN Telecom Board Chairman Hassanein Hiridjee said they must bid farewell to the brands they have grown with, as they welcome Yas to continue to provide inclusive and innovative technological solutions through long-lasting partnerships, building on its market success and legacy.

Mix by Yas will enable financial inclusion says Erwan Gelebart

In addition to unifying its mobile network operators’ brands, AXIAN Telecom is also bringing together its fintech brands in Togo, Senegal and Tanzania under the name Mixx by Yas to further align synergies across the group and enable an integrated customer experience. Fintech is one of the core growth divisions for the business, with Africa continuing to leap to financial inclusion and access to mobile payment platforms.

Erwan Gelebart, CEO Open Innovation and Fintech, AXIAN Telecom stated, “Fintech is a rapidly growing industry globally and to be at the forefront of this growth in Africa, we need to create an opportunity for customers to fully integrate their digital world. This strategic shift mirrors similar efforts across industries, such as Nigeria’s FirstBank rebranding to First Holdco earlier this month to accommodate its expanded services. The decision to rebrand the bank’s name was made at its Annual General Meeting on November 14.

  • Mauritius’ Axian Telecom buys Zuku parent company

Mauritius’ Axian Telecom buys Zuku parent company

Axian Telecom, located in Mauritius, plans to purchase Wananchi Group, the owner of the Zuku brand throughout Africa, for an unknown amount. Documents submitted to the Comesa Competition Commission indicate that Axian intends to purchase 99.63 per cent of Wananchi Group.

    Axian’s influence in African Telecommunications

Axian’s owner is Hassanein Hiridjee from Madagascar. The company runs Tigo and Zantel in Tanzania and other businesses in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, Madagascar, and the Comoros.

Wananchi will need to give up its share in the satellite communications company iSat Africa Limited. iSat Africa Ltd FZC is the company’s parent company. It was founded in the United Arab Emirates and has branches in Kenya and Zambia.

AXIAN Telecom has subsidiaries and affiliates in Tanzania, Madagascar, Togo, Uganda, DRC, Senegal, Réunion, Mayotte, and the Comoros. It offers mobile and fixed networks, digital infrastructure, and mobile banking services. Since 2015, active acquisitions and massive network expenditures have made AXIAN Telecom Africa’s 6th largest mobile provider, with 40 million customers and a market disruptor.

The first internet service provider in Kenya, Wananchi Online, was founded in 1998 by late entrepreneur Njeri Rionge and former ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru. After diversifying beyond the internet, it became Wananchi Group a decade later. In 2018, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) penalised the corporation Ksh3.4 billion in taxes, while its shareholders fought over Ksh 20 billion. Four years later, Wananchi shareholders Triple HoldCo Ltd, Liberty Global Europe 2 Ltd, and Altice Africa SARL converted loans and acquired 75% of the firm, taking over from the original shareholders.

Triple Hold Co Limited, Liberty Global Europe 2 Limited (Liberty), and Altice Africa S.A.R.L (Altice) received equity shares and Wananchi Group’s controlling rights from the Kenya Competition Authority in August 2022. CAK granted convertible loans to Wananchi Group through equity shares and controlling powers.

Private equity firms like Liberty Global, Emerging Capital Partners, Export Development Canada, Altice, and Prudence Holdings, among others, provided Wananchi with extensive equity and debt financing via the Internet so that it could expand its business in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Zambia, Malawi, and Mauritius.

ZUKU, formerly a prominent competitor in Kenya’s fixed wireless internet market, was rapidly losing market share, and Starlink’s debut in Africa didn’t help the internet-focused corporation.

    Axian strategic investment for growth

Axian’s investment in Wananchi Group is driven by the growing demand for broadband and digital entertainment in East Africa. The acquisition aligns with Axian’s mission to provide affordable and accessible connectivity across the continent, ensuring that Zuku remains a significant player in the region’s telecommunications landscape. This move also underscores Axian’s confidence in the potential for growth in Africa’s digital infrastructure.
