About 5G network in Nigeria
MTN Nigeria was the first telecom operator in the country to debut 5G in 2018. However this year MAFAB and Airtel Nigeria have also deployed the same technology. MTN Nigeria was the first telecom operator in the country to launch 5G in 2017.
Prof. Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), recently stated that e-commerce platforms and fintechs in Nigeria would profit greatly from 5G as operators expand the service. This statement was made as the large corporations are already connecting to the technology.
According to him, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), particularly financial technology and electronic commerce companies, are currently developing the digital ecosystem in Nigeria by riding on telecoms infrastructure, which is being improved upon through the deployment of new technologies.
The head of the NCC stated that ongoing efforts to broaden broadband penetration and the implementation of 5G would further boost the services of digital SMEs and that these efforts are now underway.

What is 5G?
5G is the abbreviation for the fifth generation of mobile networks. It is the fifth generation of global wireless technology, following 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. The fifth-generation mobile network, or 5G, provides a new type of network that is intended to connect nearly everyone and everything, including machines, objects, and gadgets.
It is anticipated that 5G wireless technology will enable faster peak data transfer rates of multiple gigabits per second (Gbps), ultra-low latency, enhanced dependability, huge network capacity, increased availability, and a more standardised user experience to a greater number of users. New user experiences can be enabled, and new sectors can be connected thanks to improvements in performance and efficiency.
