The Institut français du Nigéria and the French Embassy in Nigeria have launched the ‘Photojournalism Festival in Nigeria.’
The festival, which was announced in a press statement on Wednesday by the French bodies, will be held between 12th September and 13th October 2022 in Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt.
It is designed to provide a platform for interactions between Nigerian and French photojournalists and other professionals working across different media companies while advancing media & image education in the service of improved qualitative information widely available.
Additionally, the Photojournalism Festival will promote the profession, foster community ties, and encourage reflection on its future.
Several events have been planned in the cities of Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt over the course of the month-long event.
In Abuja, the festival will commence from 12 September until 11 October 2022 at the Institut français du Nigéria office, which will feature
a photojournalism Workshop on exploring and investigating Abuja with new eyes, a conference on the future of photojournalism, a debate on press freedom, and a workshop for teenagers, among others.
The Lagos session will be held at Alliance française de Lagos/ Mike Adenuga Centre from 16th September to 18th September 2022, with similar activities to the Abuja session such as photojournalism Workshop, photojournalists Presentation, and other events.

The final day of the festival, which would be at Alliance française de Port Harcourt on 13 October 2022, will comprise a conference and a Photo Contest tagged “Show us, Port Harcourt, from a fresh perspective!”
Photojournalists interested in the photo contest must send mail to cultural@institutfr-nigeria.org, which must include one digital photo captured within the past year and taken with any type of camera, alongside a one-paragraph description of the photo and one paragraph about the photographer. Applicants have till the 30th of September to indicate interest in the contest and must be ready to attend the festival event in Port Harcourt on the 13th of October.
Lecturing at the festival is renowned French photojournalist Pascal Maitre alongside multi-award winning photo/video journalist Sodiq Adelakun; British-Nigerian-Trinidadian creative storyteller Victoria Uwemedimo, and international photojournalist cum author Samuel Okocha.
