In the rapidly evolving digital landscape, global information and communications technology (ICT) giant Huawei has pledged comprehensive support for the digital transformation of Lagos State, Nigeria.
This commitment was voiced by Terrence Wu, the Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Company Nigeria Limited, during the Art of Technology Lagos 5.0 event. The event, themed “The Creative Economy and a Digital Lagos,” served as a platform for Huawei to express its dedication to fostering a fully connected and digitally inclusive Nigeria.
Nigeria Huawei envisions a future where digitalization acts as a catalyst for social, economic, industrial, and business value. Wu emphasized the importance of a digital government that is service-oriented, efficient, and promotes the development of a peaceful and inclusive society. He highlighted the role of digital transformation in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as SDG 10 – ‘Reduced Inequalities’ and SDG 16 – ‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’. Moreover, Wu linked digital technology to SDG 3 – ‘Good Health and Well-being’, citing its potential to drive long-term, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, create productive employment, and enhance job performance.

The Federal Ministry of Communications of Nigeria and the Lagos State Government have introduced policies and initiatives tailored to the digital era. These efforts support the “digital public foundation” of Nigeria and Lagos State, where emerging technologies like big data, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and blockchain are continuously developed and integrated. These technologies are reshaping industries, spurring innovative enterprises, and fostering new economic models, leading to a promising future for Nigeria and Lagos State.
Wu shared insights on how emerging technologies such as cloud computing, 8K/VR, and digital humans are revolutionizing the media industry. He cited the example of MacroGraph, a special effects company that utilized Huawei’s public cloud computing service to significantly reduce the rendering time for movie special effects, demonstrating the efficiency gains made possible by cloud technology.
Lagos State’s Digital Infrastructure Initiatives
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State announced the deployment of a 6,000km Fibre Metro Network connection across the state. This infrastructure project is a testament to the state government’s commitment to building a robust digital foundation that will support various sectors and contribute to the state’s digital economy.

ICT Talent Development: Huawei has launched multiple ICT talent initiatives that have benefited over 50,000 individuals in Nigeria. These programs aim to build the country’s digital capabilities and empower the workforce with the skills needed for the evolving digital landscape.
ICT for Change Program: The ICT for Change program offered e-government, cybersecurity, 5G, cloud service, big data, and AI training to over 3,000 Federal Government civil servants. Innovation and Experience Center: Huawei inaugurated its Innovation and Experience Center and the Joint Open Lab of the University of Lagos (Unilag) & Huawei in Lagos, Nigeria. Future Plans: Huawei plans a 30,000-person project for the next three years in Nigeria to further cultivate more ICT talents to address the local shortage of ICT skills and enrich the talent pool.
Partnerships and Memorandums of Understanding: Huawei signed memorandums of understanding with the National Board for Technical Education and the University of Port Harcourt to support the country’s ICT talent ecosystem.
