Android users can now take advantage of a new safety feature from Google dubbed “Unknown Tracker Alerts.” This feature enables users to search for trackers on their devices manually.
A notification and step-by-step instructions will be sent to the user if a tracker is found.
This feature is designed to alert users if they suspect that they are being tracked through a Bluetooth tracking device, such as an Apple AirTag. The announcement was shared during Google’s developer conference, Google I/O 2023.
If another Bluetooth tracker seems to be tracking your movements without your knowledge, an “unknown tracker alert” will sound an alarm. Android Authority made reference to upcoming enhancements to Android’s Find My Device feature in an effort to clarify how the technology works.
This innovation is designed to identify any Bluetooth trackers placed on or around you by a third party. Your phone will alert you if a tracking device gets within a specified range of it. In certain cases, the alert will specifically name the brand of tracker used, such as an Apple AirTag.

Unknown Tracker Alerts: An end for Bluetooth tracker stalking
The tracker’s route will be displayed on a map when you open the notification. You will also be provided with information on how to disable the tracker. Trackers, such as AirTags, can be made to ring loudly to aid in determining their location. You can also manually check for nearby trackers to protect your privacy and safety if you have reason to believe you are being tracked but have not gotten any notice.
Popular trackers like Apple and Samsung may help you keep tabs on your stuff, but they can also be exploited by stalkers and abusive spouses because of how readily they can be hidden in purses and cars . A BBC report detailed many instances of criminal AirTag usage, such as stalking and vehicle monitoring for theft.

Apple acknowledged these problems and committed to providing privacy warnings and notifications in February of last year. The company also claimed to work with authorities to deal with requests from people who could be stalking them in relation to their use of AirTags. It’s worth noting that Android users did not initially benefit from Apple’s modifications.
Also, Apple and Google teamed up in May to clamp down on Bluetooth tracker stalking in a comprehensive fashion. The companies made a joint statement announcing their aim to develop a common industry standard that would focus on how users could be alerted to any unwanted tracking from Bluetooth devices. There will be a definitive specification before the end of the year, according to a TechCrunch report.
