Ghana unveils chemical-free minerals testing technology PhotonAssay

Ghana has launched a state of the art mineral testing technology, PhotonAssay, as part of plans towards promoting environmental sustainability in the extractive sector.

This cutting-edge system, known as PhotonAssay, is poised to replace the conventional fire assay method for measuring gold concentrations in samples, offering significant advantages in terms of environmental impact and precision.

George Mireku Duker, Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, inaugurated the mineral testing technology.

Out with Fire Assay, In with PhotonAssay

PhotonAssay represents a transformative departure from the traditional fire assay technique. The latter method, although effective in determining gold concentrations, has been associated with severe environmental repercussions. It involves a complex and hazardous process that utilises toxic chemicals and necessitates sample fusion at temperatures as high as 1,200 degrees centigrade. This process not only poses environmental threats but also carries substantial safety risks.

PhotonAssay, in stark contrast, is celebrated for its precision, eco-friendliness, and safety. This technology operates without the use of chemicals and does not inflict harm on the environment. Its non-destructive approach aligns perfectly with the global call for environmentally responsible practices in the mining industry.

George Mireku Duker commended Intertek Minerals Ghana, a prominent mining service company, for its investment in the photon assay laboratory. He highlighted the crucial role that a diversified array of expertise and technologies plays in the responsible and sustainable exploitation of a country’s natural resource endowment.

Ghana boasts abundant mineral resources that underpin its development. Currently, the nation is host to around 500 exploration projects, 23 large-scale mining operations, and 235 service companies engaged in mineral extraction. Given the capital-intensive and risk-laden nature of the mining sector, Duker emphasised the importance of optimization, cost control, innovation, and resilience throughout the mining value chain.

The Significance of PhotonAssay

The introduction of PhotonAssay technology is a monumental step forward for the mining industry and environmental conservation. It offers an analytical method that delivers rapid yet accurate results, revolutionizing decision-making along the mineral value chain.

Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, Western Regional Minister, hailed the installation of this advanced technology as a groundbreaking development for both the mining sector and the environment. In light of the global emphasis on environmental sustainability, he expressed his satisfaction with the implementation of a chemical-free and non-destructive method for precisely measuring gold concentrations in samples.

A Game-Changer for Geological Survey

Isaac K. Nwinbelle, Acting Director-General of the Ghana Geological Survey Authority, stressed the critical role of precise instrumentation in mining and mineral exploration. This technology facilitates the collection of accurate and reliable data, offering numerous advantages for geologists and mining professionals.

Having PhotonAssay technology in Ghana is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and sustainability of mineral exploration. This development is especially pertinent to the Ghana Geological Survey Authority, which is mandated to conduct geological investigations leading to the discovery of minerals that support the sustainable exploitation of the nation’s mineral resources.

The PhotonAssay method promises to minimise environmental impact, improve resource estimation and grade control, reduce exploration costs, and ultimately support informed investment decision-making.

John Fowler, Senior Vice President Minerals – Exploration and Production, underscored Intertek Minerals Ghana’s commitment to growth in the sector. The introduction of PhotonAssay technology at its Tarkwa laboratory signifies the company’s dedication to advancing mining practices and environmental responsibility in the region.

As PhotonAssay takes centre stage, Ghana’s mining industry stands to benefit from enhanced accuracy, safety, and environmental sustainability, marking a significant stride towards responsible mining practices in the country.
