FG appoints National Coordinator for Healthcare Initiative

In a strategic move aimed at unlocking substantial investments into Nigeria’s healthcare delivery system, President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Abdu Mukhtar as the National Coordinator of the Presidential ‘Unlocking Healthcare Value-Chain’ Initiative.

This initiative, housed under the Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare, intends to foster collaboration among various ministries and departments to restructure the healthcare ecosystem. The goal is to boost the domestic manufacturing of healthcare products, improve healthcare services, and create quality jobs across the value chain.

Unlocking Healthcare Value-Chain Initiative

The ‘Unlocking Healthcare Value-Chain’ Initiative is a cross-ministerial effort with a time-bound approach to revamp Nigeria’s healthcare sector. It targets six key areas within the healthcare ecosystem:

Health Product Manufacturing: The initiative aims to increase the local production of generic pharmaceuticals, vaccines, biologics, and medical devices, thereby reducing the country’s dependence on imported healthcare products.

Health Logistics Services: Enhancing the logistics network to ensure the efficient distribution of healthcare products and services.

Health Technology Services: Advancing healthcare technology services to improve the overall quality of healthcare delivery.

Health Retail Services (e-Commerce): Creating opportunities in e-commerce for healthcare-related retail services.

Health Provider Facilitation: Facilitating the involvement of healthcare providers to enhance services.

Health Payor Reform (Third Party Administrators & Insurers): Reforming the health insurance system to provide more accessible and affordable healthcare to Nigerians.

The Vision for Nigeria’s Healthcare Sector

President Bola Tinubu has entrusted Dr. Abdu Mukhtar with a critical role in realizing the immense economic potential within Nigeria’s healthcare system. Dr. Abdu Mukhtar: A Seasoned Leader

Dr. Abdu Mukhtar, the newly appointed National Coordinator for this critical initiative, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role. He served as the Director of Industry & Trade Development at the African Development Bank (AfDB) before accepting this appointment. During his time at AfDB, Dr. Mukhtar played a pivotal role in the expansion of the Dangote Group of Industries, particularly in the cement production sector across multiple African countries.

Previously, Dr. Mukhtar held the position of Group Chief Strategy Officer at the Dangote Group, where he actively participated in significant joint ventures in various sectors such as power, oil & gas, and agriculture. His accomplishments in business expansion have been recognized throughout his career.

Before his role at the Dangote Group, Dr. Mukhtar was the Chief Executive Officer of the Abuja Investment Company Limited, affiliated with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), from 2007 to 2011. This role helped solidify his reputation as a leader with an exceptional understanding of economic development and strategic thinking.

Dr. Mukhtar’s academic background is equally impressive. He holds a Doctorate in Biotechnology from Boston University, a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Business School, a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, and a Medical Degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
