Delivering a speech on behalf of Zamtel CEO Jason Mwanza, Zamtel Chief Technical Officer Mwiya Wamunyima stated, “We strive to be at the forefront of technological advancements, not only in communications but also in financial payment solutions.

Zambia’s Permanent Secretary commend initiatives
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Technology and Science, Dr. Brilliant Habeenzu, was the Guest of Honour at the event. At the event, he said, “e-SIM technology has seen increasing adoption globally, particularly in developed markets and regions with solid telecom infrastructure.
“For instance, it is anticipated that the global market for e-sim will expand at a compound annual growth rate (cagr) of 18.4% between 2024 and 2030. The market is anticipated to increase from its estimated $8.03 billion in 2024 to a valuation of about $24.8 billion by 2030.
“The lack of smartphone penetration and infrastructure issues have caused the adoption of e-sim technology in Africa to be slower than in other regions. However, because of the rising availability of compatible devices and the efforts of mobile providers like Zamtel, the e-SIM market is steadily growing throughout the continent. In response to this expansion on a global scale, it was projected that by 2023, there will be close to 3.4 billion e-SIM-equipped smartphones in use globally. This covers, among other things, IoT devices, automobiles, tablets, smartphones, and smartwatches. By 2025, more than 6 billion devices will have e-SIM functionality.”
He continues, “More than 50% of people own smart devices in Zambia. This indicates that almost 50% of people have access to a smartphone. Even though this rate is increasing, it is still lower than in more developed markets because of cost, device availability, and connectivity issues, especially in rural areas.
“We as a government have pledged to solve these concerns in collaboration with the business sector. For example, we are concentrating on switching from 2g to 3g, 4g, and 5g networks under the digital transformation plan to make sure we scale up smartphone adoption nationwide.
“Furthermore, we must improve cyber security and personal data protection in light of this shift and the growing adoption of e-SIM technology. For this reason, the government is fortifying the cyber security legislation to guarantee the protection of vital data and information infrastructure that underpin e-sim technology.”
