Ensuring the safety of children online

With the improved features, Apple aims to ensure the safety of children engaging in online communication through its products.

The company is prioritizing the safety of children in its new security features as part of its commitment to protecting user privacy and fostering a secure online environment.

With the increasing use of technology by young individuals, Apple recognizes the importance of providing tools and safeguards to protect children while they communicate online through their products.

By implementing robust privacy and security measures, Apple aims to prevent potential risks and threats that children may encounter while using their devices. These measures may include enhanced parental controls, restrictions on explicit content, and features that enable parents to monitor and manage their child’s online activities. Apple strives to create a digital ecosystem that allows children to explore and communicate safely while giving parents peace of mind.

By integrating these protective measures into their products and services, Apple aims to empower parents and caregivers to provide a safer online experience for children, allowing them to benefit from technology while minimizing potential risks.

Alongside these improvements, Apple also promised the introduction of innovative features. One such feature is Live Voicemail, which grants iPhone owners access to real-time transcripts of voicemails. This allows users to privately decide whether to answer the call or not.

Privacy is a fundamental Human Right

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook reiterated this message during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2023.

The company’s announcement emphasized the company’s firm belief that privacy is a fundamental human right.

Apple’s dedication to child safety also aligns with this broader belief that privacy is a fundamental human right.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, stated that privacy is an integral part of every new product and feature developed by Apple. He emphasized the company’s commitment to providing industry-leading privacy features and the highest level of data security worldwide.

Federighi highlighted specific updates during the event, such as significant enhancements to Safari’s Private Browsing options and the expansion of Lockdown Mode. Lockdown Mode, introduced in July last year, is an exclusive Apple feature that substantially reduces the risk of hacking by rendering certain features and apps inoperable.

Major updates Apple users should expect

Safari Private Browsing: With this new feature, Apple has established itself as a leader in web browsing options by focusing on privacy.

Apple also plans to enhance Safari Private Browsing with a feature that locks browser windows when not in use, ensuring the safety of tabs even when users are away from their screens.

Advanced tracking and fingerprinting protections: Apple also introduced advanced tracking and fingerprinting protections to prevent websites from identifying users’ devices and tracking their browsing activities. This additional protection will guard against automated web trackers and threats from individuals trying to access user devices.

Link Tracking Protection: This new feature will remove embedded code from webpage URL links, preventing tracking across websites, email clients, and app services. This feature will extend beyond Safari to include Apple Mail and other applications.

Communication Safety: This Apple’s child protection feature has been upgraded to identify both photos and videos that contain nudity. It now applies across various Apple operating systems, including AirDrop, FaceTime video messages, and the Photos picker.

Communication Safety processes all data on the personal device itself, guaranteeing privacy and protection without Apple or third-party apps accessing personal information.

Parents have control over enabling Communication Safety on specific devices and accounts in their Family Sharing plan.

Apple also offers new APIs for app developers to integrate their app features seamlessly with Communication Safety.

Sensitive Content Warnings: Apple will introduce this option to iMessage, AirDrop, FaceTime, and other services, allowing users to avoid unwanted nude images and videos.

Live Voicemail: This is also an upcoming feature that provides a live transcript of incoming voicemails. It is generated securely on the iPhone using Apple’s Neural Engine, enabling users to decide whether to answer a call by reading the voicemail message.

Unknown callers can go directly to Live Voicemail without ringing if the user activates the Silence Unknown Callers setting. Calls identified as spam by carriers will be instantly hung up on and won’t appear in Live Voicemail.

Lockdown Mode: This feature is designed for individuals with heightened privacy needs, and receives updates to provide enhanced protection against mercenary spyware and other threats. This includes stricter wireless connectivity defaults, improved safeguards for media handling and sharing, and the ability to test suspicious programs.

Lockdown Mode will soon be available on Apple Watch’s watchOS.

According to Apple, the company will provide app developers with new tools and detailed information on data practices for third-party software development kits (SDKs). This aims to improve transparency and enable developers to provide accurate “Privacy Nutrition Labels” to consumers before downloading their software products.

These privacy and security upgrades will be available as free software updates in the fall, according to Apple.
