Twitter's $1,000 "simple" verification enrages users

Twitter’s $1,000 “simple” verification enrages users

Twitter Verified, the Twitter platform’s verification service, said that organizations and their affiliates can get verified without waiting for the official verification procedure.

Nigerians and other Twitter users are outraged by the services’ “overpriced” and “laughable” pricing, and for good reasons.

Twitter explains that “Verified Organisations is a new way for organizations and their affiliates to identify themselves on Twitter.” Verified organizations allow approved organizations to vet and authenticate their affiliated accounts without Twitter. It says that this makes it less likely that “Twitter is the only source of truth about which accounts should be verified.”

The organization’s Twitter profile will include affiliated accounts’ logos and badges. “All groups are reviewed before joining verified organizations,” it reads. Twitter Verified Organisations cost $1,000/month (plus tax) and $50/month for each additional affiliate in the U.S. Regional fees may vary. Nigerian customers pay N450,500 and N23,030, respectively.

How do Twitter-verified organizations work?

Twitter Verified Organisations lets businesses, non-profits, and government institutions of all kinds sign up, manage their verification, affiliate with other organizations, and verify any related account.

A business or non-profit that subscribes to Verified Organisations will receive a gold checkmark and a square avatar, whereas a government or multilateral body will receive a grey checkmark and circular avatar.

Organizations can also affiliate with their associates. An account that is linked has a checkmark and an affiliate emblem, a miniature image of the parent company’s profile picture, next to it. This emblem links to the linked organization, attracting Twitter followers from your whole network.

Companies can affiliate with leadership, branding, support handles, employees, and teams. Precincts, officials, and other government organizations can associate. An organization can have any number of affiliates (as long as they are related).

Subscribing gives businesses access to our new verification tool, giving them full control over their microblogging presence. Affiliated accounts can be added and removed at any time. To gain verification, affiliates must accept an invite and double opt in.

What is the benefit for users?

Twitter distinguishes between verified organizations and their affiliates. Gold and gray check marks, square avatars, and custom affiliation badges identify you and your entity’s main, spokesperson, and subsidiary accounts. The statement states, “We will continue to improve our service and may update our features sometimes.”

However, it maintains the right to remove your checkmark or another badge without warning if you breach our Purchaser Terms, Terms of Service, and rules or if your account is suspended.

Netizens respond

Tweeps are incensed by organization verification costs. Subscriptions cost $8 per month, which some find outrageous. Hence, a business with 20 affiliates falls short.

Because of a similar idea, others think the idea is dumb and shouldn’t exist.

Other people suggest that firms should increase engagement because it validates them to their audience.

Given Elon Musk’s earlier promise that he will make Twitter profitable, users will get acclimated to premium features in the coming months.

Elon Musk recently valued the social networking site at $20 billion, less than half the $44 billion he bought it for five months earlier, according to an internal email viewed by US news agencies.
